I shout at her, “Ana, what is wrong with you? Why do you keep thrusting yourself into my bedroom, without invitation? This is really becoming an annoyance!” Totally discounting what I said, she insistently asks, “What are you doing in here, and why are you naked?” I want to throw her out, but I decide to stay civil, “I’m trying to rest, but you keep coming into my room, disturbing me. The room felt a little warm, so I took off my clothes and…” Then I catch myself, “Why do I need to explain this to you, Ana? What’s up with you? Are you having a problem sleeping? What’s the problem, Ana?” I’m a little perturbed and my tone says it. She responds, “Well, I was trying to sleep also, but I keep hearing voices, and …” I cut her off, “Voices! Again! Come on, Ana! I think you’re the one paranoid. I’m trying to get a nap in!” She interrupts, “I know what I heard, Gayle.” I say, “Perhaps you heard me talking to Allen again. I’m sorry if I woke you.” She bellows out, “Gayle, this was no phone conversation that I heard.” I bellow back at her, “Well, Ms. Know-It-All, what was it? I mean, you seem to know more than I do about what’s happening in my bedroom? What exactly did it sound like, Ana?” Without hesitation, she says, “It sounded like two people having sex.” I deeply sigh, “Really Ana! Two people having sex! Do you see two people?” She yells, “No, I don’t Gayle, but I know what I heard.” I say, “Like I said, you must’ve heard me on the phone with my husband, or maybe were you dreaming, and wishing you were having sex?” She gets upset, “No – I – wasn’t – dreaming, Gayle! And, that was a really low blow.” She then begins walking around my room, and looking in my closets. She sure has a lot of balls. I yell at her, “Ana, what the hell are you looking for?” She says, “It’s not what, but it’s who? I know you think I’m stupid, but I’ve been standing outside your door listening, and I know I heard you and another person ~ a man ~ talking, and making love, or should I say having sex? I even heard him calling your name.” I patronize her, “Ana, I think you’re the one who needs to see a doctor. Make the appointment, and I’ll go with you.” She’s steaming now, “Don’t patronize me, Gayle.”
I want so badly to tell her to get the hell out of my house, but instead, I try to remedy the situation. “Ana, I’m trying to tell you that I was talking to Allen. I didn’t get a chance to take care of him before he left, so I had to take care of him over the phone. I had the phone on speaker, so I could have free hands to ‘work-it,’ you know what I mean. I’m sorry if we disturbed you; that was not my intention.
